Background of the Study

Rural electrification has long been a central focus in Nigeria’s developmental policies, particularly in underserved regions. Zangon Kataf Local Government, located in Kaduna State, has historically faced challenges related to access to electricity, limiting the economic opportunities available to its population. Rural electrification programs are considered crucial for stimulating economic activities, especially in rural areas where the lack of electricity infrastructure affects agriculture, small-scale businesses, and education (Ali & Mohammed, 2024). The Nigerian government, through various initiatives such as the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and state-level projects, has made efforts to provide reliable and sustainable electricity to rural areas. This study examines the extent to which rural electrification programs in Zangon Kataf have impacted economic activities such as agriculture, small businesses, and educational development.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the implementation of rural electrification programs, Zangon Kataf Local Government continues to struggle with inadequate electricity supply, which hampers local economic development. Small businesses, particularly in rural areas, face challenges in operating efficiently, and agriculture remains underdeveloped due to the lack of power for modern farming technologies (Yakubu & Idris, 2023). This study seeks to understand the direct and indirect effects of rural electrification programs on the local economy and to assess why these programs have not fully realized their potential in driving economic growth.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the impact of rural electrification programs on agricultural productivity in Zangon Kataf.

  2. To assess how electricity access has affected small businesses in the local government area.

  3. To explore the role of rural electrification in improving educational opportunities and outcomes in Zangon Kataf.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has rural electrification influenced agricultural productivity in Zangon Kataf?

  2. What is the effect of electricity access on the growth and sustainability of small businesses in Zangon Kataf?

  3. How has rural electrification impacted educational opportunities in the local government?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Access to electricity has significantly increased agricultural productivity in Zangon Kataf Local Government.

  2. Small businesses in Zangon Kataf have experienced growth due to the availability of electricity through rural electrification programs.

  3. Rural electrification has contributed to improved educational outcomes in Zangon Kataf.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the role of rural electrification in fostering local economic development. By understanding the direct impacts of electricity on agriculture, small businesses, and education, the study can inform future electrification strategies to maximize their economic benefits in similar rural settings.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Zangon Kataf Local Government in Kaduna State and will specifically investigate the effects of rural electrification programs on the local economy. The limitations include potential difficulty in isolating the specific impact of electrification from other socio-economic factors.
