Background of the Study

Stroke, a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In Nigeria, the burden of stroke is significant, and its management in emergency settings poses unique challenges. Benue State University Teaching Hospital, located in Makurdi, provides emergency care to stroke patients, many of whom require rapid intervention to prevent long-term disability or death. Emergency nurses play a pivotal role in the initial assessment, stabilization, and treatment of stroke patients, often being the first healthcare professionals to assess and initiate care.

Emergency nursing interventions, such as timely recognition of stroke symptoms, initiation of intravenous therapy, and preparation for advanced treatments, can significantly influence patient outcomes. Studies have shown that prompt medical interventions and quick access to stroke units improve patient recovery and reduce the risk of complications (Asogwa et al., 2023). However, little research has been conducted on the specific role of emergency nurses in stroke management at Benue State University Teaching Hospital. Evaluating the contributions of emergency nurses in stroke care in this setting will provide valuable insights into how nursing care can be optimized to improve stroke patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Stroke patients often face delayed diagnosis and treatment, which can result in worsened outcomes. Emergency nurses at Benue State University Teaching Hospital play a vital role in managing stroke cases, but their specific contributions and the effectiveness of their interventions have not been comprehensively evaluated. This study seeks to assess the role of emergency nurses in the management of stroke patients, focusing on how their actions impact patient outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of emergency nurses in the management of stroke patients at Benue State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To assess the impact of emergency nursing interventions on the clinical outcomes of stroke patients.
  3. To identify challenges faced by emergency nurses in the management of stroke patients and propose solutions for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of emergency nurses in the management of stroke patients at Benue State University Teaching Hospital?
  2. How do emergency nursing interventions influence the outcomes of stroke patients?
  3. What challenges do emergency nurses face in the management of stroke patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nursing interventions significantly improve the clinical outcomes of stroke patients.
  2. There is a positive relationship between timely nursing interventions and reduced stroke-related morbidity and mortality.
  3. The presence of specialized training for emergency nurses leads to improved outcomes for stroke patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the role of emergency nurses in managing stroke patients at Benue State University Teaching Hospital. It will evaluate the impact of nursing interventions and identify challenges faced by nurses. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining accurate patient data and potential biases due to varying nursing practices.

Definitions of Terms

  • Stroke: A medical condition that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, leading to brain damage and potentially long-term disability.
  • Emergency nursing interventions: The initial and urgent care provided by nurses to stabilize stroke patients, including assessment, triage, and preparation for advanced treatments.
  • Morbidity: The condition of being diseased or the incidence of complications resulting from a medical condition.
