Background of the Study

Youth organizations play an increasingly significant role in climate change mitigation, particularly in local communities. In Minna Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State, youth organizations have emerged as key advocates for environmental sustainability, raising awareness about climate change, and promoting grassroots initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving environmental resilience (Muhammad & Idris, 2024). The global climate crisis demands immediate action, and youth organizations are often seen as change agents who can mobilize both local and international support to address environmental challenges. This study explores the role of youth organizations in Minna, investigating their involvement in climate change mitigation strategies and assessing their effectiveness in driving change within their communities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing awareness about the impacts of climate change, the role of youth organizations in addressing these issues at the local level is under-explored. In Minna, while some youth groups are actively involved in climate change mitigation, the full extent of their efforts and the barriers they face in creating sustainable environmental changes remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate the contributions of youth organizations to climate change mitigation in Minna and identify the challenges they encounter in their advocacy and implementation efforts.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To examine the role of youth organizations in climate change mitigation within Minna LGA.

• To assess the impact of youth-led initiatives on environmental sustainability in Minna.

• To identify the challenges faced by youth organizations in promoting climate change mitigation.

1.4 Research Questions

• What role do youth organizations play in climate change mitigation in Minna?

• How effective are youth-led initiatives in addressing climate change issues at the local level?

• What challenges do youth organizations face in implementing climate change mitigation programs?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Youth organizations significantly contribute to climate change mitigation efforts in Minna.

• H2: Youth-led initiatives have a positive impact on local environmental sustainability in Minna.

• H3: Challenges such as limited resources and lack of government support hinder the effectiveness of youth organizations in climate change mitigation.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into the potential of youth organizations in fostering climate change mitigation efforts in Minna and similar communities. The findings will inform the development of policies and programs that support youth involvement in environmental sustainability and provide recommendations for enhancing their effectiveness (Muhammad & Idris, 2024). The study will also highlight the importance of youth participation in climate action, emphasizing the role they can play in shaping the future of their communities and the planet.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on youth organizations within Minna Local Government Area, examining their involvement in climate change mitigation efforts. Limitations of the study include challenges in accessing data from some youth organizations and potential biases in self-reported outcomes from the groups themselves.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Youth Organizations: Groups or associations led by young people that focus on social, environmental, and cultural issues, including climate change.

• Climate Change Mitigation: Efforts and actions taken to reduce or prevent the causes of climate change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions or enhancing carbon sinks.

• Environmental Sustainability: The ability to maintain ecological balance by avoiding the depletion of natural resources, ensuring long-term environmental health.
