Background of the Study
Proper nutrition is essential for the growth, cognitive development, and overall well-being of children. However, many school children in Nigeria, including Kaduna State, consume unhealthy diets due to limited nutrition knowledge, peer influences, and socio-economic factors. Malnutrition, whether in the form of undernutrition or overnutrition, can have long-term health consequences, including stunted growth, obesity, and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases.
Nutrition education programs in schools aim to promote healthy eating habits by providing students with knowledge about balanced diets, portion control, and the importance of micronutrients. While some schools in Kaduna State integrate nutrition education into their curriculum, the extent to which these programs influence students’ dietary choices remains unclear. This study investigates the impact of nutrition education on dietary choices among school children in Kaduna State.
Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing nutrition education efforts, many school children in Kaduna State continue to consume unhealthy foods, contributing to malnutrition and diet-related diseases. The lack of awareness about healthy food choices and limited access to nutritious meals pose significant public health challenges. There is a need to evaluate whether nutrition education effectively translates into improved dietary choices among school children and identify the factors that influence its success or failure.

To examine the relationship between nutrition education and students’ dietary choices.
To identify barriers to the effective implementation of nutrition education programs in schools.
