Background of the Study
Entrepreneurship education has emerged as a vital tool for fostering innovation and driving economic development. In Nigeria, where youth unemployment and underemployment are persistent challenges, embedding entrepreneurial skills within the educational curriculum is seen as a pathway to empower individuals and stimulate job creation (Adeniyi, 2023). By equipping students with knowledge on business planning, financial management, and innovative problem-solving, entrepreneurship education aims to cultivate a generation of proactive individuals capable of launching their own ventures. Such education not only encourages self-employment but also fosters a culture of innovation that can transform traditional industries and spur economic diversification (Chinwe, 2024).

Over recent years, numerous initiatives have been introduced in Nigerian educational institutions to integrate entrepreneurship training into both secondary and tertiary curricula. These programs are supported by government policies, private sector partnerships, and international development agencies, which recognize the potential of entrepreneurship to drive sustainable economic growth. However, the implementation of entrepreneurship education faces several challenges, including inadequate curriculum design, limited access to practical training facilities, and insufficient support networks for budding entrepreneurs. Furthermore, there is a noticeable gap between theoretical knowledge imparted in classrooms and the real-world skills needed to succeed in competitive markets (Oluwaseun, 2025).

This study examines the role of entrepreneurship education in driving development in Nigeria by analyzing its impact on entrepreneurial activity, job creation, and overall economic performance. It will also assess how effectively current educational programs bridge the gap between academic learning and practical business operations. Through a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative performance metrics with qualitative insights from educators, students, and business leaders, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing entrepreneurship education and maximizing its contribution to national development.

Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread recognition of the importance of entrepreneurship education in fostering economic growth, its impact in Nigeria remains suboptimal. Many educational institutions struggle to effectively integrate practical entrepreneurial skills into their curricula, resulting in graduates who are ill-prepared for the demands of starting and sustaining a business (Ibrahim, 2023). The lack of experiential learning opportunities, mentorship programs, and access to startup capital further limits the capacity of entrepreneurship education to translate into successful business ventures. Consequently, the potential for entrepreneurship education to mitigate high youth unemployment and drive economic diversification is not fully realized.

Furthermore, the disparity between the quality of entrepreneurship education in urban versus rural areas exacerbates existing socio-economic inequalities. In rural regions, limited resources and infrastructural challenges hinder the delivery of effective entrepreneurship training, while urban centers benefit from better-funded programs and stronger industry linkages. This uneven implementation not only diminishes the overall impact of entrepreneurship education but also contributes to regional imbalances in economic development. The problem is compounded by inadequate evaluation mechanisms, which obscure the measurement of long-term outcomes associated with these educational initiatives. This study seeks to identify the key challenges that impede the success of entrepreneurship education and propose actionable strategies to enhance its effectiveness as a catalyst for economic development (Olaitan, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of entrepreneurship education in enhancing entrepreneurial skills.

  2. To identify challenges in the implementation of entrepreneurship training programs.

  3. To recommend strategies to improve the practical relevance of entrepreneurship education.

Research Questions

  1. How does entrepreneurship education influence entrepreneurial activity and job creation in Nigeria?

  2. What are the major obstacles in integrating entrepreneurship into the educational curriculum?

  3. How can curriculum design and industry partnerships be improved to enhance entrepreneurial outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Entrepreneurship education significantly increases entrepreneurial activity among graduates.

  2. Inadequate practical training negatively affects the success of entrepreneurship education.

  3. Strengthened partnerships between educational institutions and industries enhance the effectiveness of entrepreneurship training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on tertiary institutions in Nigeria, drawing on surveys, interviews, and academic performance data. Limitations include regional disparities in program quality and challenges in assessing long-term entrepreneurial outcomes.
